What Keys are Difficult to Copy

There’s certain kinds and qualities of keys that cannot be duplicated, or are very difficult to duplicate. In this blog entry, the Albuquerque key duplication and professional Albuquerque locksmith team here at 505 Locksmith will detail what forms of keys are difficult to copy.

Worn Down Key

Small variations can occur on duplicate keys based on a range of factors, specifically if the original key is worn down. Variances can also be caused by keys placed weirdly into the duplicator jaw, how the machine was calibrated, and the angle of the duplicator cutting wheels. This might cause some cuts on the duplicated key to be higher than correct or lower than correct. Sometimes, self-service key duplicating keys can scan the key and amplify distortions, creating a key that cannot turn the lock at all.

Interchangeable Core Locks

Interchangeable core locks have control keys that can remove the lock core, allowing for quick rekeying – providing heightened security. These keys shouldn’t be punched or duplicated. SFIC punches are expensive unique equipment that can duplicate interchangeable core lock key, and SFIC locks usually cme in restricted keyways – meaning a locksmith may not always be able to copy it.

Locksmith Only Keys

Some property managers use restricted keys – or locksmith only keys – which are keyways that are ONLY available to locksmiths and unique distributors. These key blanks are meant for locksmiths, security professionals, and dealers of security products. If you have one of these keys – usually an LSA, MX10, or HS key, you’ll have to find a locksmith who is registered to sell the key blanks for your particular restricted key.

High Security Key with Open Keyway

Some property owners want unique locks and keys with additional security features like bump resistance, pick resistance, and drill resistance. These might include Medeco’s 00 keyway, Schlage’s Everest 3123 keyway, and CX’s ZOL keyway. These locks can usually be purchased by distributors, but are not usually installed by locksmiths, who usually work with other types of locks.

Do Not Duplicate Keys

Many key blanks are sold with the words “do not duplicate” stamped on the key bow. Most key bows have a unique shape that helps locksmiths determine what type of lock the key is used for. DND keys usually have a rectangular neutered bow, and talented locksmiths can determine what type of key you’re working for by looking at key grooves. This isn’t the best way to prevent unauthorized entry, but many locksmiths will refuse to copy these keys.
